KABUL) secretary Ziaul Haq Amarkhel on Sunday urged local and international observation groups to expand their mission to more areas during the June 14 presidential election runoff.

Amarkhel told a meeting with representatives from local and international election monitoring groups in Kabul to enlarge their network to more areas than they covered during the April 5 elections.

He said observers were allowed to monitor the entire election process and share their ideas with the Independent Election Commission.

He said the IEC was making efforts to avoid repeating its past mistakes and ensure the runoff was held in a transparent manner and the people voted for candidate of their choice in a peaceful environment

Amarkhel also urged both the frontrunners to continue their campaigns in a peaceful and healthy way and explain their plans and persuade the people to vote in the historic ballot through their programmes.

The election commission has launched a nationwide awareness programme aimed at encouraging people to participate in the runoff election.
