Afghan woman reelected OIC HR commissioner

KABUL (Pajhwok): Mrs. Asila Wardak has been re-elected for the second round of the Independent Human Right Commission (IPHRC) of OIC (organization of Islamic cooperation) for another terms of three years, a statement said on Monday.

It merits mention that the commission has been established in June 2011. The first election of this commission was conducted in Astana in 2011 in the Counsel of Foreign Ministers (CFM) meeting.

From 54 member states of OIC who had nominees for the IPHRC, only 18 Commissioners have been elected by the Counsel of Foreign ministers based on the background, knowledge and experience on the field of human rights.

The statement said among the 18 commissioners only four women was one of the four women who has been elected.

The 18 commissioners are elected from the three geographical regions of Africa, Asia and Arab. From every region six commissioners are elected.

It said that the main objectives of this commission are protection and promotion of human rights among Islamic countries. The terms of each commissioner are three years, and it’s honorary and totally independent position.

It further said that the first meeting of the commission was held in Jakarta and sponsored by Indonesian government but the rest of meetings held in Jeddha as the headquarters of OIC is in Jeddha, kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Mrs. Asila has extensive experience in the field of human rights and women ‘s right and she is an afghan diplomat in the permanent mission of Afghanistan in United Nation / New York, also an active member of Afghan Women Network.

This is the first time that an Afghan Women is electing based on a very strict competition as human rights Commissioner from Afghanistan to an International Commission. In the past Dr. Sima Sammar was appointed as special rapporteur on Human Rights issues in Sudan by UN.
