MAIDAN SHAHR/SHARANA (Pajhwok): Eight militants and three Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers have been killed during clashes in central Maidan Wardak and southeastern Paktika provinces, officials said on Tuesday.

There were clashes between security forces and armed rebels in Jalrez, Daimardad and Nirkh districts of Wardak last night, the governor’s spokesman said.

Attaullah Khogyani told Pajhwok Afghan News the same night, ANA troops clashed with insurgents in the Khwaja Bazaar area of Maidan Shahr, the provincial capital, leaving three ANA service members dead.

He said six militants had been killed during these clashes and a large quantity of weapons and ammunitions seized by security personnel.

In Paktika, officials said police ambushed and killed two notorious Taliban commanders in the Janikhel district.

Deputy provincial police chief Col. Nisar Ahmad Abdulrahimzoy identified the slain rebel commanders as Qasim and Juma Gul. He said the two were notorious for making and directing roadside bombings. The two were killed in Shakhelabad area a day earlier, he said.

“The pair wanted to carry out organised attacks during the second round of presidential elections, but they were killed,” he said.

Abdulrahimzoy said police had launched an operation codenamed “Revenge” in all parts of the province to improve security for the runoff election.
