KABUL (Pajhwok): Police have recovered more than one ton of narcotics in the Pul-i-Charkhi locality of Kabul City, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) said on Wednesday.

The contraband was being delivered to the south and western parts of the country, which was recovered by police from a truck in the eastern gate of Kabul City, deputy counternarcotics deputy head, told reporters.

Lt. Gen. Baz Mohammad Ahmadi said five tons of narcotics had been seized in the capital during the last couple of years. He added Kabul had turned into a transit city of drugs toward south and east.

He said drugs production in Afghanistan was a matter of concern and the active cooperation of regional countries was needed to eliminate the scourge from the country.

The MoI official asked international community to extend all out assistance to combat drug trafficking as its smuggling fueling terrorism.

He said poppy cultivation witnessed record surge this year because security forces were engaged in protecting the crucial election.
