KABUL (Pajhwok): Interior Minister Omar Daudzai on Saturday said there would be a spike in militant attacks but insurgents could not derail the June 14 presidential runoff election.

Flanked by security officials, election commission members and presidential candidate Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai, the minister told a press conference in Kabul that there could be minor incidents of violence on the election day.

He called on the Afghans to widely participate in the election and reject terrorism and the Taliban by tainting their thumbs with election ink.

The interior minister said they had learnt many lessons from the previous round of elections and mistakes occurred on April 5 would not be repeated.

Duadzai assured the security forces would remain impartial and would try their level best to prevent rigging.

Independent Election Commission (IEC) chief Mohammad Yusuf Nuristani told the press conference that the runoff would be more transparent than the previous round.

He said observers would have no problem monitoring the election process, saying each presidential candidate had been issued 50,000 observer cards. He said ballot paper shortages would not recur this time.

Speaking on the occasion, Ashraf Ghani said the conduct of a fair election was people’s demand and hoped IEC officials and security forces would make their all-out efforts to make the election a success.

He said a shortage of polling sites amounted to depriving the masses of their constitutional right. He stressed impartially on the part of security forces in the runoff election.

Nuristani said Abdullah Abdullah could not attend the meeting due to yesterday’s attack on his campaign motorcade and a busy schedule.
