KABUL (Pajhwok): President Hamid Karzai on Sunday congratulated Bashar al-Assad who has been re-elected in a landslide as Syrian president, a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) said.
Karzai congratulated Assad on behalf of Afghans for his reelection as president of Syria for another seven-year term.
“I hope democracy in Syria will prosper and the ongoing unrest there will come to an end under your leadership,” the statement quoted Karzai as saying.
According to the final results, Assad garnered 10,319,723 votes. The supreme constitutional court put turnout at 73.42%.
Activists said that the Syrian war, which continued since last three years, has left more than 160,000 people dead, with the global community deeply divided. The US and its allies backing the uprising against Assad but he has the support of Russia.
