AAF ready to ensure poll security: Azimi

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Defense (MoD) on Tuesday said that 195,000 Afghan National Army (ANA), soldiers, special units and air forces were ready to ensure election security.

MoD said that air surveillance was one of the important parts of security maintenance for run-off elections that would cover all provinces of the country. Addressing a joint press conference, MoD Spokesman Gen. Zahir Azimi said that Afghan air force was ready to operate if needed during the election process.

He said at least 195,000 ANA soldiers were deployed to ensure election security and avoid drawbacks viewed in the in the first round. Publics, civil societyinfo-icon organizations and media would also support the process. Afghan Air Force (AAF) general commander, Maj. Gen. Abdul Wahab Wardak said the air force had put in place tight measures for the second round of election.

He added the air force was so far active in 10 provinces and important election materials were transferred to six zones through air.

The election materials to 62 polling centers was planned to be airlifted, Wardak said, adding Afghan security force has the capability to ensure security on their own and transfer election materials without any problems, but support of ISAFinfo-icon forces was also needed.

Currently 70 helicopters and a number of transportation airplanes were available which helped Afghan air force to carry out the task, Wardak said. MoD said Afghan air force had a lot of improvements but some problems in defending the force was still exist. Gen. Zahir had said that the force did not have defense airplanes during combat operation but discussion to fill the gap was going on with the international community.

He said there were no problems in training area of Afghan forces and more aircrafts to would be available to Afghan forces by 2017.
