KABUL or upper house of parliament on Tuesday urged people to actively participate in runoff elections and foil any rigging or foreign interference attempt against the national process.

None of the eight candidates were able to obtain 50+1 threshold needed for an outright victory in April, 5 voting. The runoff election is scheduled to take place on June 14 between Dr. Abdullah Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai.

In today’s session, the ballot process came up for discussion, with senators urged people to demonstrate massive turnout as they did in the first round of election.

Ali Akbar Jamshidi from Daikundi province said massive participation in the runoff election would help foil rigging and foreign conspiracies against the national process.

He also urged people to accept poll results if any of the candidates succeeded.

His colleague from Kabul, Anar Kali Honaryar, said people should play monitor the process on Election Day.  “I hope all eligible men and women exercise their voting right and security forces provide good security,” the senator hoped.

A senator from Logar said security officials should not make such statements that could fuel panic among people and deprive them from participating in the process.

Second chairman of the house, who chaired today’s session, Rafiullah Gul Afghan, called elections a national process. He said security forces should put in place tight security measures to help people easily participate in the process.
