GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): Insurgents on Wednesday set free five of the 34 Kandahar University teachers they abducted a day earlier in the Qarabagh district of southern Ghazni province, an official said.

The teachers were travelling on the Kabul-Kandahar road to home for vacations when they were kidnapped by armed militants.

One of the teachers who offered resistance was injured and ended up in hospital, according to Dawa Khan Minapal, acting spokesman for the Kandahar governor.

Mohammad Qasim Desiwal, the administrative chief for nearby Andar district, said the five teachers were released after mediation by tribal elders, who had been tasked with negotiating with the kidnappers.

He said the elders were trying to secure the release of all captives.
