In a statement from the Pakistan embassy, the Foreign Office said: “These elections are a milestone in the democratic journey of the Afghan people. We congratulate the government and people of Afghanistan on this achievement.”
Pakistan hoped voters would once again demonstrate their firm resolve and exercise their right to determine their future through democratic means.
On the eve of the first round of the elections on April 5, Pakistan had taken special steps to beef up security along the border.
“Our authorities are taking additional measures for the second round of elections, including by retaining more troops for this purpose,” the statement added.
The measures include enhanced vigilance and security along the border, stepped-up patrols in border areas, enhanced checks by immigration staff, communication through existing coordination mechanisms and hotline contact with Afghan counterparts.
It said Pakistan sincerely supported the cause of strengthening democracy and peaceful democratic transition in Afghanistan.
