KABUL on Saturday praised the Afghans’ commitment to a peaceful and democratic future for their country.
“I congratulate the voters for their courage in the face of threats and violence from the Taliban once again turned out in high numbers,” he said.
In a statement, Ambassador James B. Cunningham said the Afghan security forces, well prepared and effective, again performed superbly in protecting the elections.
“Today belongs to the Afghan people and their institutions. It is clear that millions of men and women returned to the polls, undeterred and determined to help shape the future of their country.”
He said many Afghans had worked hard to prepare for the day. The electoral commissions must perform their roles impartially, responsibly and transparently, he stressed.
Vigilance and oversight were essential and allegations of fraud needed to be addressed, the diplomat noted. The candidates and their supporters were also asked refrain from premature judgments and criticism.
“Looking ahead, the United States stands ready to work with the next President of Afghanistan… Today marks the start of a new era for Afghanistan, and Afghans can be proud of what they have achieved.”
