JALALABAD (Pajhwok): On eve of Ramadan, vendors and shopkeepers are busy minting money by selling substandard jams, sauces and other spicy foods in eastern Nangarhar province, with locals fear low quality foods will cause spread of diseases.
Khalid, owner of Salar Jam and Juice producing company, said thousands of cartons of juices and jams were produced ahead of Ramadan. Some people import low quality of juice and jam from Peshawar and sell in Jalalabad with high prices, he informed.
Ishaq, a resident of Jalalabad City, told Pajhwok Afghan News low quality jam and sauces were being sold in shops of the city openly which was dangerous to health.
He said last year many people fell ill after eating expired and unhealthy sauces and jams during Ramadan. He demanded the departments concerned should adopt measures to discourage selling of low quality foods, fruits and vegetables.
