PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): Cases of violence against women have decreased by 80 percent in central Logar province this year in comparison with those recorded a year before, an official said on Thursday.

Provincial Women’s Affairs Director Shima Zargar told Pajhwok Afghan News they had registered only five cases of violence against women in Logar so far this year against about 100 such cases the previous year.

“This year’s cases were about domestic disputes which have been resolved by families and elders,” she said.

She linked the significant drop in cases of violence against the gender to awareness programmes and the creation of a special council for women in Logar.

She also cited positive change in the behaviour of government officers toward women, saying no case of the kind had been recorded so far.

About girls’ attendance in schools, she said girls in all districts, except Kharwar, attended school without any problem.

Education officials say girls’ enrolment has increased in educational institutes as compared to the past.

The Provincial Education Department spokesman, Shapoor Arab, said the strength of girl students stood at 40,000 among the total 150,000 students.

A member of the women’s council, Lailuma, said creating awareness among people about women’s rights helped change men’s attitude toward their women.
