KABUL (UNAMA) has welcomed the Independent Election Commission (IEC)’s decision to launch an additional probe into polling stations where ballots cast numbered 599 or higher.

In a statement, the UNAMA said it encouraged the IEC to implement further measures that could enhance transparency, neutrality and impartiality of the electoral process and separate and reject fraudulent ballots.

The mission also welcomed the re-scheduling of the announcement of the preliminary results from the June 14 presidential runoff election to Monday.

In line with the UN Security Council’s statement adopted after its meeting on Afghanistan on June 2, UNAMA looked forward to concluding the electoral process in accordance with the relevant laws and mandates of the electoral institutions and the orderly transition to a new administration.
