MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Attending a gathering in the capital of northern Balkh province, students from various universities on Sunday urged President Hamid Karzai to sign the higher education law.

The gathering was organized by the Afghanistan activists were also present.

However, the higher education law is still being debated in the lower house of parliament and the president could not sign it until approved by the legislature.

The draft law could not be approved because of differences among lawmakers over Pashtu and Dari words Pohantoon and Danishgah respectively used for university.

The student coordination centre head, Syed Mohammad Yazdanparast, told Pajhwok Afghan News the higher education law was prerequisite for having standard higher education in the country.

He said the higher education process could not be streamlined due to the absence of the mentioned law.

Yazdanparast said in public and private sector universities up to 120 students were taught under a single roof, which was against the required standard.

“The differences among lawmakers over the Pashtu and Dari words have blocked the approval of the higher education law, which will remain unapproved until the linguistic and ethnic differences exist in the lower house.”

Therefore, he said, they urged President Hamid Karzai to sign the law without its parliamentary approval.

A private university student, Nilofar Sharifi, said the public and private sector universities could not attain the required educational environment in the absence of the higher education law.

She said President Karzai should seriously consider the law’s approval during his last days in office in order to facilitate the students.
