KABUL on Sunday said the election results must not be politicised and be announced in line with the Independent Election Commission’s timeline.

Flanked by other members of the jirga, Mohammad Halim Fidaee, the forum’s spokesman,  told reporters in Kabul the IEC should release the preliminary results from the June 14 presidential runoff election without any further delay.

He said if the results were delayed they would resort to civil disobedience and launch countrywide protests.

The former governor said they would not allow anyone to play with people’s votes through deals and conspiracies. He said the only authorized body to address allegations of fraud was the Independent Electoral Complaints Commission.

Fidaee called on the UN and the international community to help Afghanistan execute the political transition.

Another member of the jirga, Gulab Mangal, said the people were waiting for the release of preliminary results, which should be announced as scheduled.

Mangal said the Afghans were fed up with coalition governments and that was why the Change and Continuity team led by presidential candidate Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai was against a coalition government.

The preliminary results, earlier due on July 2, were delayed for five days until Monday, with the IEC citing technical problems for the delay.

Ghani on Saturday warned they would not accept any further delays in announcing the preliminary results.
