KANDAHAR CITY: (Pajhwok): At least eight militants and one policeman were killed in twin attacks on the governor’s house and police headquarters in southern Kandahar province on Wednesday.

Police sources told Pajhwok Afghan News the firefight was still ongoing and the bodies of the militants were lying in front of the governor’s office in Kandahar City.

Dawa Khan Minapal, the governor’s spokesman, confirmed the killing of four militants and one policeman. He said three policemen had been injured in the fire exchange.

Minapal said a heavy explosion took place in front of the governor’s house and later the attackers entered a hotel and started firing on the government building.

He added some foreigners were inside the office at the time of the assault. Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers surrounded the site and sporadic gunshots can still be heard in the area.
