KABUL has discussed the election impasse with President Hamid Karzai and senior officials.
Jan Kubis met the president, the chief justice, head of the Commission for Monitoring Implementation of the Constitution, chairmen and members of the election bodies.
During the overnight meeting at the Presidential Palace, the top UN diplomat briefed his interlocutors 0n the talks he had held with the presidential candidates.
A statement from the Presidential Palace said he also floated proposals for resolving the election problem and investigating votes from over 8,000 polling stations — 43 percent or 3.5 million ballots.
Kubis said he would formally present the proposals to the Independent Election Commission, the Independent Electoral Complaints Commission and the presidential hopefuls today.
Speaking on the occasion, Karzai supported UNAMA’s suggestions and urged the two commissions as well as the candidates to cooperate with the world body in resolving the electoral deadlock.
However, the statement did not give details of the proposals offered by Kubis to address the problem concerning controversial votes.
