FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): Residents of northeastern Badakhshan province blame the outgoing provincial council for doing no service to the general public, fearing the new one may follow suit.

But the newly-elected representatives have promised all-out efforts to bring positive changes to people’s lives. In Badakhshan 15 runners were declared winners, six of them new faces.

Abdul Bashir, a taxi driver, accused the previous provincial council members of having failed to keep their promises and forgetting the masses as soon as they embarked on their jobs.

Hayatullah, belonging to Jurm district, claimed nothing had changed in terms of security and economic development in his area. He hoped the current council would hear their voice and share their concerns with higher-ups.

Ziauddin Wasiq, a new figure on the provincial council, vowed to accomplish all that he had promised on the campaign trail and thereby restore people’s confidence in their representatives’ integrity.

One main difference between the previous and the current council is that new members are mostly youth and educated. Their efforts will hopefully lead to a change in people’s lives.

Ahmad Jawed, who has been able to retain his provincial council seat, said they were sharing public problems with local officials, but no one was taking steps for their solution.

Now that the new government has embarked on work, the administration will hear people’s voice and take active steps for their prosperity. The provincial council elections were conducted on April 5, but the results were announced after a seven months delay.
