KABUL on Thursday agreed to enhance their bilateral trade from the existing $2.5 billion to $5 billion over the next two to three years.

The agreement came at a meeting between Afghan Finance Minister Hazrat Omar Zakhilwal and his Pakistani counterpart Ishaq Dar in Islamabad, the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan reported.

Zakhilwal, heading a delegation, arrived in Islamabad from Lahore, where he held talks with Punjab chief minister Shahbaz Sharif. The visit comes ahead of President Ashraf Ghani’s two-day state visit to Pakistan on Friday.

Zakhilwal told the Punjab CM that Afghanistan was keen on enhancing trade ties with Pakistan.

Zakhilwal and Sharif discussed bilateral trade and business relations. Sharif apprised the visiting Afghan delegation about the ongoing development policies of his government.

The CM said that there were vast opportunities for Afghan traders to increase trade and business ties in Pakistan and to invest in various fields of the country, particularly in the Punjab province.

Sharif said Pakistan and Afghanistan historical brotherly relations and Pakistan was following the policy of peaceful relations with its neighboring countries.

Zakhiwalk appreciated the degree of development in Punjab and revolutionary policies of the provincial government.

He evinced a keen interest in enhancing their business and trade links with Pakistan and frequent visits by trade delegations between the two countries.

In Islamabad, Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Commerce Khurram Dastgir Khan held a meeting with Zakhilwal and resolved to take measures to double mutual trade within next two years.

Meanwhile, Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Resources Jam Kamal Khan also said bilateral relations between the people of Pakistan and Afghanistan needed to be strengthened further.
