KABUL (Pajhwok): Three attackers were killed after they stormed a compound of an international non-governmental organisation in the Wazir Akbar Khan diplomatic district of capital Kabul late on Thursday evening, police said.

One of the attackers exploded his suicide vest at the entrance to the building housing staff of International Relief and Development Inc (IRD), a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization, at about 7:20pm, Kabul police spokesman Hashmat Stanikzai told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said the remaining two attackers were killed during a firefight with security forces. He said the group attack involved three attackers and all of them had been killed.

Deputy Interior Minister Ayub Salangi was among several senior officials who reached the scene on the sixth street of the 15th road area, which has been cordoned off.

Salangi said the situation was under control and calm after the three attackers were killed.

Security officials said one Nepalese guard of the organization was injured in the assault.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the group attack. Their spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said a large number of foreigners had been killed and wounded.

The group attack began at about 7:20pm, said resident Abdul Wasi, who lives in the 10th police district zone. He said the gunfire lasted until 8:10pm, but had no information about casualties.

Earlier Kabul police spokesman Hashmat Stanikzai said security forces had reached the area, but the target and nature of the attack was not immediately known.

The attack follows a motorcycle bomb attack on a convoy of British Embassy cars earlier in the day, killing one British citizen and four Afghan civilians. More than 35 Afghan civilians were wounded in the earlier blast that took place east of Kabul city.
