TAKHAR (Pajhwok): Three development projects were completed in the Bangi district of northern Takhar province with the help of German Cooperation with Afghanistan on Thursday.

The uplift projects include a new maternity unit at Bangi Hospital, road repairs and maintenance between Merha and Afghan Qishlaq and a flood protection wall for Shingrabi.

A statement from the German Cooperation with Afghanistan said a fund of 5 million afghanis had been donated by Germany for building work and planning of the projects.

The inauguration ceremony was hosted by Hafizullah Safi, director of Public Health, Eng. Raz Mohammad Faiz, director Rural Rehabilitation and Development (DRRD), Mohammad Husain, the chief of Bangi district and locals.

Dr Frank Pohl, development commissioner from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), was at the ceremony representing German Cooperation with Afghanistan.

The new maternity unit, includes an examination room and mothers’ care room, can provide standard healthcare for expecting mothers. The ward will also be able to concentrate on reducing child and mother mortality rates.

Hafizullah Safi said: “It is highly important that mothers-to-be get better health services in the remote district of Bangi. We are all happy that pregnant ladies can now be treated by experienced midwives and that we have state-of-the-art equipment for staff at the hospital to use.”

At road between Merha and Afghan Qishlaq had been repaired and the flood protection wall in Shingrabi was also built with the contribution of the community. The new stretch of road would make transporting people and goods between Merha and Afghan Qishlaq easier.

The new 130 metre flood protection wall would now protect up to 200 families in Shingrabi against regular flooding in spring. Both projects were developed and initiated by the Community Development Councils (CDC) and the DRRD in Takhar.

As part of the Afghan-German Cooperation programme, the RCDF is implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.

The RCDF provided support for its Afghan partners’ development priorities both in the provinces and districts in six of Afghanistan’s northern provinces.
