QALA-I-NAW (Pajhwok): The Agriculture Department in northwestern Badghis province has started distributing 210 tonnes of improved wheat seeds to 4,200 farmers, officials said on Thursday.
Agriculture Director Ghulam Mohammad told Pajhwok Afghan News a 50-kilogram bag of seeds would be distributed to each farmer at a discounted rate of 546 afghanis. He added the discount was to persuade farmers to grow more wheat.
Noor Mohammad, a grower, welcomed the distribution of refined seeds but said it should happen on time.
Niamatullah, another farmer, said some had more land and only one bag of seed was not enough for them. “I personally need at least four bags of wheat.”
He added the amount being distributed was based on quota for each province and that they had asked the ministry for more seeds and were waiting for a response.
