40 nurses graduate from AKHS programme

KABUL Programme (CNEP) was held in Faizabad, the capital of northeastern Badakhshan province, the Aga Khan Health Service (AKHS) said on Monday.

Representatives of government departments, UN agencies and non-governmental organisations joined staff of the main provincial hospital, parents and community members to mark the occasion.

Dr Farzana Fani, acting public health director, said: “We have witnessed high rates of maternal morbidity and mortality in Afghanistan. Fortunately, today the number of nurses has increased and they are employed in many health facilities.”

Coordinator of Community Nursing Education Programme of AKHS, Roya Masoom, said: “I am proud the Aga Khan Health Service, in collaboration with the Public Health Directorate, was successful in training the 40 students graduating today.”

This CNEP class of 40 nurses was funded by the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD). So far 138 midwives and 60 nurses have graduated from Community Midwifery and Nursing Education programs in Badakhshan.
