KABUL): Poachers continued to kill and capture wild birds and animals in violation of a government ban on hunting in the country, President Karzai said on Thursday.
In his biweekly radio address to the nation, the president called for preserving the environment. “We must eschew doing what harms our environment,” he stressed.
“Indiscriminate hunting of wild animals and birds has affected their breeding in Afghanistan,” said the president, regretting violations of the ban.
He added some Afghans continued to kill and capture wild animals in defiance of the decree that was issued several years ago. Fowls, deers and other animals were captured and kept in homes and sold in markets, he maintained.
“Just as hunting destroys wildlife, capturing animals and birds causes the extinction of certain species. This is a serious mistake – and a sin at that,” Karzai remarked.
The president explained the disappearance of species led to an ecological imbalance, impinging on the environment. He highlighted the imperative protecting the milieu, saying human life was tied to the environment.
While urging the nation to prevent deforestation in the country, he said protecting the environment was also necessary to ward off natural disasters.
