BAMYAN CITY (Pajhwok): Ten girls took part in an eight-kilometre cycle race to find their way to Afghanistan national cycling team in central Bamyan province on Saturday.

The race started from Shahidan area and culminated at Khwaja Ali area in Bamyan City, the provincial capital, provincial female cycling coach, Zahra Hussaini told Pajhwok News.

She said Maryam Mohammadi won the race and qualified for the national team while Nahid and Zakia finished second and third respectively.

Cycling was introduced in Bamyan three years ago but the sports did not progress much due social barriers, the coach said.

Maryam, who won the competition, said she peddled the 8-kilometer distance in 17 minutes and 45 seconds. She was happy to win the race.
