FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): Ten Public Order Police personnel, who were kidnapped by Taliban 45 days back, have been rescued during an operation in northeastern Badakhshan province, an official said on Saturday.
Officials said 14 policemen had been seized by militants but four of them were had already released as a result of mediation by local elders. The Taliban had asked for the release of their inmates in exchange of the 10 policemen.
Police spokesman Lal Mohammad Ahmadzai told Pajhwok Afghan News the 10 policemen were rescued during an operation in the Khastak village of Juram district late on Friday. The policemen kept in a mosque were rescued without any resistance from their captors.
A week ago, the Badakhshan governor had said the militants had sought the release of their associates in exchange for freeing the policemen. But the offer was turned down when the fighters made more demands.
