TALOQAN (Pajhwok): New avalanches buried more than 100 homes in the Warsaj district of northern Takhar province, raising fears about more casualties, an official said on Monday.

Sunnatullah Taimour, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the latest avalanches occurred in Wighnan locality and the road leading to the area had been blocked.

He said the governor had called an emergency meeting to discuss the situation and efforts at rescuing those trapped. However, no reports about possible casualties had been received so far, the gubernatorial spokesman said.

He said the governor had talked to Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah and urged him to send a rescue mission involving helicopters to the province.
