KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): Nearly a dozen police officers have been sacked due to increased kidnappings in northeastern Kunduz province, an official said on Sunday.

Provincial police chief Syed Jahangir Kiramat told Pajhwok Afghan News the fired officers had been careless in discharging their duties and some of them were suspected of having links with the Taliban.

Without naming them, he said that the officers failed to take effective steps to control kidnappings and insecurity, besides abusing their official positions. Replacements would be announced soon, he added.

A week ago, local security officials said four police officers had been dismissed due to the kidnapping of a businessman in Kunduz. The step came as a number of moneychangers protested the kidnappings and involvement of police officials.
