MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): A dozen various development projects, benefiting nearly 3000 families, have been completed in the Charbolak district of northern Balkh province, an official said on Monday.

Executed under the National Solidarity Programme (NSP), the projects include buildings for three social centres, according to NSP spokesman, Farid Ahmad Sadat, in Mazar-i-Sharif, the provincial capital.

He said the projects also included a school building, blacktopping of an eight-kilometre road and 46 culverts.

An irrigation water distribution system and the construction of a 200-metre wall for a social centre were part of the 12 projects, he said. He said the schemes benefitted 2,885 families in 12 villages of the district.

Mohammad Hassan, a resident of Rahmatabad village, told Pajhwok Afghan News a building for a social centre had been constructed in their village. He said the village had been without a place to hold jirgas and other social events.

The NSP official said the projects cost 30 million and 119,000 afghanis, which had been provided by the Ministry of Rural Development, with local residents contributing 10 percent of the cost.

He said there were 934 villages in Balkh and so far 2,034 projects had been completed in these villages under the programme and work on another 500 projects was underway.
