KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): Dozens of armed insurgents stormed a border police post in the Shorabak district of southern Kandahar province, leaving one policeman and 15 attackers dead in the ensuing clash, an official said on Thursday.

About 70 local and foreign militants staged the attack on the post called Chowlai at about 11am last night, Kandahar deputy police chief Rahmatullah Atrafi told Pajhwok Afghan News. He claimed the attackers included Punjabis, Burmese and Chechens.

He said the attackers outnumbered the border police but faced stiff resistance, with the bodies of 15 attackers still lying at the scene.

Evidence collected from the clash site revealed most of the attackers were foreigners who fled into Pakistaninfo-icon after the attack, the police official said.

Atrafi acknowledged spike in insurgent attacks in Kandahar during the fighting season, but said each attacks resulted into huge losses to the attackers.

The police official said the number of foreigners had recently increased among the ranks of insurgents.

“The Afghans are no longer interested in the war, that’s why foreign fighters have been called in to spread terror and show the rebels remain a force.”

Over the past one week, Atrafi said 22 insurgents had been killed and nearly a dozen captured alive during security operations in Kandahar City and in a number of districts.

Most of the dead militants were Punjabis, Burmese and Chechens, who had been sent to Kandahar for attacks, the official said.

He said search operations were underway in all districts of the province in order to improve the security situation, flush out militants and enable residents to observer the month of fasting and upcoming Eidul Fitr festival in a peaceful environmentinfo-icon.
