KABUL (Pajhwok): Around 200 internally displaced families (IDPs) received winter aid from the UN’s refugee agency in central capital Kabul, an official said on Wednesday.
The aid worth $1 million included warm clothing, fuel, food and kitchen accessories, said Bo Schack, UNHCR country director in Afghanistan.
He said the assistance was part of the agency’s larger programme to distribute similar relief goods to more than 32,000 families across Afghanistan.
He added 1,300 more families would benefit from the aid in Pul-i-Charkhi area east of Kabul in the near future.
Acting Afghan Refugee Minister Fazl Ahmad Azimi said the aid programme would target families who were in dire need of it.
He said 8,000 families, who had been displaced by the conflict in various provinces, were currently settled in Kabul.
Sultan Ayub, who received the aid, said instability forced him to migrate Kabul from Maidan Wardak province with his family. He currently lived in a tent with his family in Qanbar square of the city.
“The aid can meet our immediate needs, but we are a family of six people and the government should pay more attention to us,” he told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Mir Ahmad, another internally displaced from Kandahar province, complained the aid was not enough to satisfy his family’s needs. His family is living in a tent in Silo locality.
