KABUL in district councils, Afghan Women’s Network (AWN) members on Wednesday said they were dissatisfied with the cabinet.

Speaking at a gathering titled “national campaign for a 25pc women’s quota in district councils”, the AWN members criticised the unity government for failing to introduce four females ministers-designate as the government had promised earlier.

The Constitution says every district should have a council, the members of which be elected by people. Election commission officials say district council elections could not be held due to insecurity and a lack of budget.

District council elections are expected to be held with parliamentary polls next Afghan calendar year, but the election commission has not officially confirmed the dates.

AWN member Robina Hamdard said giving 25 percent quota to women was necessary to overcome the gap between the government and the people.

“It is one of the district council’s responsibilities to bring the government and the people closer. If we want this liaison then women’s participation is a must,” she said, adding they would continue their efforts at approving the desired quota.

Fauzia Habibi, deputy women’s minister, told the gathering that women’s participation in political arena was commendable during the past 13 years.

Minority lawmaker Anarkali Hunaryar criticised the government for breaking its promise to appoint four female ministers in the new cabinet. Three women were among 24 cabinet picks the government a day earlier introduced to parliament for a vote of confidence.
