KUNDUZ CITY/MAIMANA (Pajhwok): Three militants, including a commander, were killed in northern Kunduz province, police said on Sunday.
The provincial police chief told Pajhwok Afghan News a group of militants planning to attack a security check post in Aliabad district was ambushed by security forces.
Maj. Gen. Ghulam Mustafa Mohseni said three fighters, including notorious Taliban commander Zalmay, were killed during the ensuing clash.
Some of the rebels were injured, according to Mohseni, who said police also seized two motorbikes and some ammunition.
In a separate incident, police in northwestern Faryab province seized 86 kilograms of opium, said Col. Mohammad Naeem, the provincial police chief.
The opium, he said, had been placed in a rickshaw that was on its way to Maimana. The contraband was seized in Shirin Tagab district. The driver was arrested.
