TIRINKOT (Pajhwok): Four policemen were killed and as many injured during an overnight clash with armed insurgents in the Chinartu district of central Uruzgan province, an official said on Monday.

Mohammad Ismail, the district chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News three militants entered a house and took positions there, opening fire at police after they encircled the residence on Sunday night.

The ensuing clash lasted 10 hours, leaving four policemen dead and another four injured, he said, adding the dead body of only one militant was later found at the clash site. The remaining two militants had been able to flee.

Former Chinartu district police chief, Wali, said the police wanted to capture alive the three insurgents and as a result, the firefight prolonged. He said the policemen tried to save civilians from being harmed and thus lost their own lives.

A Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousaf Ahmadi, said the rebels stormed two police-posts, killing five and injuring four others. He also confirmed the death of one fighter.
