JALALABAD/SHARAN (Pajhwok): Expired and low-quality medicines and food items weighing 44.5 tonnes have been torched in Nangarhar and Paktika provinces, officials said on Sunday.
Nangarhar Public Health Director Dr. Najibullah Kamawal told Pajhwok Afghan News they set alight 35 tonnes of low-quality food and eight tonnes of expired drugs.
The drugs torched had been collected from different medical stores and pharmaceutical companies over the past eight months. He said a company selling expired juice had been referred to the judicial organs after 250 cartons of spurious juice was recovered.
Also on Sunday, 1.5 tonnes of such items were burnt in the Yousafkhel district of southeastern Paktika province. Public Health Director Dr. Asadullah Rassouli said the expired materials had been seized from different stores.He asked retailers not to sell expired medicines and food.
