SAR-I-PUL CITY (Pajhwok): At least 50 insurgents have been killed and another 40 wounded in northern Sar-i-Pul province in security forces operations, officials said on Thursday.

Officials said that the operation codenamed “winter conquest” has been underway in Sherma and Borqoot localities of Sozma Qala district.

Acting Governor Abdul Jabbar Haqbin told Pajhwok Afghan News the offensives had started two weeks ago but had stopped during heavy snowfall.

He said 15 insurgents were killed and 12 others wounded on Wednesday only after the operations resumed.

Ghulam Hazrat, a notorious Taliban commander, who had allegedly killed Sancharak district police chief was also killed in the operations, Haqbin added.

“The joint operation is ongoing in the area. Only one army soldier has been wounded slightly,” he continued.
