HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Sixty prisoners have been released from the central jail in western Herat province in compliance with a presidential decree issued on the occasion of Eid Milad-un-Nabi (SAW), an official said on Thursday.
Brig. Gen. Abdullah Azizi, in-charge of the jail in Herat City, said a total of 200 inmates would be released in compliance with the 39th presidential decree. He said 60 prisoners, including 17 women, had been released as part of the process.
Some freed prisoners, wishing anonymity, told Pajhwok Afghan News rights of prisoners were being violated inside the prison.
But Azizi rejected if prison guards mistreated inmates, but confirmed space problem.
Earlier, prisoners held at the facility have repeatedly gone on hunger strike for what they alleged misbehavior of jail officials.
