JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Seven people died and hundreds of homes were washed away when flash floods triggered by heavy rains swept through eastern Nangarhar province, the governor’s house said on Monday.
Heavy rains lashed all districts of the province since last week, triggering flash floods that left seven people dead, four injured, 1783 homes destroyed and more than 250,000 acres of agriculture land inundated, the governor’s office said in a statement.
The statement, citing reports submitted by district chiefs, said Afghan army personnel had been able to reach some areas in-time rescuing marooned families.
Local official said the affected families would be assisted, pending a survey to assess the damage.
The death toll from recent avalanches and flooding has risen above 300 with scores of others injured.
The bulk of deaths came from central Panjsher province, where above 200 people lost their lives to avalanches.
Other provinces where avalanches and flooding wrecked havoc include Parwan, Herat, Farah, Ghor, Badghis, Baghlan, Badakhshan, Kunduz, Takhar, Sar-i-Pul, Nangarhar, Laghman, Kapisa, Nuristan, Bamyan and Nimroz.
