HERAT/FIROZKOH (Pajhwok): More than 20,000 families would benefit from nearly 100 different projects that have recently been completed in western Herat and Ghor provinces, the National Solidarity Programme (NSP) said on Tuesday.

In a statement, the NSP said 87 projects, including roads, retaining walls, bridges, water control gates and construction of small streams were completed in various districts of Herat at a cost of 1.8 million afghanis.

The statement said the projects facilitated about 19,000 families in Adraskan, Chishti Sahrif, Kohsan, Shindand, Injil, Ghoryan and Gulran districts.

In Ghor, seven similar projects have been completed, according to Eng. Mohammad Shafiq Wakili, the rural development director.

He said the projects were implemented in Ahingran, Sarkasi, Dahan Jermtun, Kandalbash and Chapri Firozkoh villages of Chaghcharan, the provincial capital, and in Gharsofli and Nawabad villages of Shahrak district.

He said the projects that included retaining walls, water control gates and steams cost 17 million afghanis, benefiting 3,000 families.

He also said work on the irrigation system overhaul was underway to bring under irrigation more than 2,200 acres of land.
