SHARAN (Pajhwok): More than 100 people on Wednesday staged a protest rally in southeastern Paktika province, calling for the provincial governor and other officials to be sacked.

Civil society members, tribal elders, youth and local residents took part in the demonstration in Sharan, the provincial capital.

Qalandar Malang, a youth leader and one of the protest organisers, told Pajhwok Afghan News it was their second day protesting against the governor and high officials.

He said the governor had lost his control over the provincial administration and had been unable to resolve people’s problem. He vowed to continue their protest until the governor and other officials were sacked.

He claimed the governor was surrounded by self-centered individuals, who did not let him know problems of the people.

Former jihadi commander Mamur Shadi Khan said the people of Paktika had suffered a lot under the incumbent governor’s leadership. He said there had been no positive change in people’s lives during his rule.

Mukhlis Afghan, the governor’s spokesman, rejected allegations against the governor, saying some elements, seeking their personal interests, had organised the protest.

Afghan said some people, who were not allowed to attend yesterday’s gathering at the governor’s house because the hall was full, were now trying to defame the governor.
