MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): The governor of northern Balkh province on Monday said he was not against the unity government decision, but he had been hoping people’s real determination towards democracy would be given a priority.

Atta Mohammad Noor, also the Jamiat-i-Islami from plunging into crisis after hectic efforts and campaigns.

“Keeping in view the country’s current situation and after an in-depth look at the political, economic and social circumstances, I agreed with the Reform and Unanimity team on signing the national unity government deal,” he wrote.

Noor said he did not oppose the agreement, but from the core of his heart, his thoughts were with the millions of people who had been hoping their determination and democratic would be given a priority.

A supporter of Abdullah, the governor said: “Some individuals on the fickle election commission brought their credibility under question. There had been fears the country was heading to crisis and the democracy reception becoming lukewarm, but they (election officials) did what they wanted to do.”

Addressing President Hamid Karzai, Noor said what happened at the Presidential Palace the other day should have been done in line with democratic norms and people’s demands, so that it would have been remembered in history as a strong initiative for a complete transfer of power.

He apologised to the Afghans who suffered due to the prolonged electoral process. “I hope in the next elections five years later, we won’t face a traitor and a fraud election commission. Your votes and will are respected.”
