KABUL (Pajhwok): President Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai on Wednesday stressed the need for permanent budgets for provinces and the appointment of qualified individuals as governor.
At a meeting with the Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG) chief and other officials at the Presidential Palace, Ahmadzai called for upholding merit in all appointments.
Vice-President Sarwar Danish also attended the meeting, which was called to discuss ways of improving the efficiency of provincial governors and mayors in resolving public problems and ensuring good governance.
According to a statement from the Presidential Palace, the new head of state suggested permanent budgets be planned for provinces and benchmarks set for gubernatorial appointments.
The president promised he would constantly stay in touch with governors to speed up resolution of people’s problems and improve the quality of governance at the provincial level.
About the role of mayors, he said, discussions would be held with residents of cities. Based on those discussions, different government programmes would be chalked out, he added.
The mayors’ role in collecting taxes and their sagacious utilisation also came under discussion. The IDLG was directed to work together with other relevant institutions to devise a comprehensive strategy for achieving the targets.
