JALALABAD (Pajhwok): University students on Sunday staged a protest demonstration in eastern Nangarhar province against the publication of sacrilegious cartoons in a French weekly, asking the government to close the Embassy of France in Kabul.

Heavily armed men attacked the French magazine Charlie Hebdo on Jan 8, killing 12 people, including the editor-in-chief and prominent cartoonists. But in its latest edition, the satirical weekly again published a cartoon of an Arab man but with a tear in his eye, holding a “Je Suis Charlie” sign under the headline “All is forgiven”.

Nangarhar University students carried out a peaceful protest demonstration against the magazine and asked the Afghan government to close the French Embassy in Kabul.

Speaking on behalf of the protestors, a student, Sher Ali, read out a resolution letter, asking the Afghan government to expel the French ambassador in Kabul and close the embassy.

Ali read: “We are ready to defend our religion Islam; we live and die for the Prophet Mohammad (pbup).” Residents of southeastern Paktika province also protested against the magazine a few days ago.
