KABUL (Pajhwok): One of the severed cables importing electricity to capital Kabul from Tajikistan and Uzbekistan would be reconnected over the next three days on emergency basis, but repairing all the cables would take a month, an official said on Thursday.

The cables traversing the Russian built tunnel north of Kabul have been damaged by a powerful snowstorm and avalanches three days ago in the northern Salang area of Baghlan province.

Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat chief Abdul Raziq Samadi told Pajhwok Afghan News their technical team had been able to reach the northern Salang area after hectic efforts.

He said the cables had extensively damaged and the repair work would be completed in two phases including removing snow from fallen pylons.

“The supply system is in more bad condition than we have heard about it in the past. Our technical team is currently assessing the damage to know what is needed to start the repair work.”

Meanwhile, the power utility’s spokesman, Wahid Tawhidi, who was in the northern Salang area, told Pajhwok Afghan News their investigation showed nine pylons had damaged.

He said three of the towers had completely fallen to the ground and the remaining six got their tops damaged in the avalanches.

He said the overall repair work would take a month to complete using land resources, but said the technical team was optimistic it would repair one of the lines on emergency basis over the next three days.

Tawhidi said some Kabul city’s electric power needs were currently fulfilled from hydropower stations in Mahipar, Sarobi and Naghlu areas and the thermal power plant in the city.
