KABUL (Pajhwok): The Independent Electoral Complaints Commission (IECC) on Saturday rejected an objection from the poll panel to its decision on invalidating votes from 118 polling centres.
The watchdog insisted its decision, being final and unchangeable, must be accepted and the election result announced. The IECC had conveyed its assessment of complaints to the poll panel on Thursday.
Abdul Sattar Sadat, the watchdog’s chairman, had said IEC could challenge the decision within 24 hours of its receipt. After addressing objections, any decision made by the panel was final, he added.
A day earlier, a member of the Independent Election Commission (IEC), Mohammad Aziz Bakhtiari, said the IECC’s decision for invalidating votes of 118 polling stations had been rejected and the panel was asked for a clarification.
But on Saturday, IECC spokesman Nader Mohseni told Pajhwok Afghan News the IEC letter was answered on Friday evening when the IECC provided the required details of vote invalidation.
“Our decision is final now and the IEC is responsible for following it,” he reiterated, hours after the presidential runners informed political and judicial leaders of “important progress” in their negotiations.
