JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Security officials on Saturday said that the Doab district of eastern Nuristan province has been completely brought under government’s control as a result of a joint operation that left 28 insurgents dead.
201st Selab Military Corps spokesman Col. Numan Hatafi told Pajhwok Afghan News the operation was wrapped up after the district was purged from insurgents.
He said the slain militants included two high profile commanders. Another 13 militants were injured during the offensive.
Two Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers were also lost to the clashes, he said, adding foreign militants fought alongside their local comrades.
A day earlier, the Taliban rejected they had lost control of Doab district.
About a week ago, the rebels launched a group attack on Doab district headquarters and overran it but were soon driven by Afghan forces after a series of operations.
