KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): Medical services at the main hospital in northern Kunduz province were suspended on Sunday when doctors, paramedical staff and pharmacy owners went on strike against the kidnapping of a surgeon’s son.

The six-year-old son of Dr. Khalilullah Natori was kidnapped about a week ago by unknown gunmen. Doctors and paramedics boycotted duty and gathered in front of the zonal hospital.

They warned they would not return to work until the boy was released. Speaking on behalf of striking doctors, Dr. Latif Sharifi told Pajhwok Afghan News they had informed security departments about the kidnapping, but the boy remained missing.

He said the boy was kidnapped on his way home from school. The kidnappers had demanded $100,000 in ransom, an amount his family could not afford to pay, he added.

“We have met the governor and discussed with him the issue, but nothing happened, now we all have decided to boycott duties until the child is released safe and sound,” Dr. Sharifi said.

However, a patient attendant, Mohammad Ali, said his sick relative could die if doctors did not operate on him. He said they had come from a far-off area and that patients should not suffer due to the kidnapping saga.

Police spokesman Syed Sarwar Hussaini said intelligence officials had launched an operation to rescue the boy. He said they had found the channel to talk to the kidnappers and the boy would be released soon.
