KABUL (Pajhwok): At least five people, including three assailants, were killed after a group of militants stormed a foreign guesthouse in the Kart-i-Seh locality of Kabul on Saturday, police said.

The attackers stormed the building at 4:00 pm in front of the Mustaghni High School, triggering a clash with security forces that lasted two hours and a half.

Kabul police spokesman Hashmat Stanikzai told Pajhwok Afghan News that three gunmen targetted the guesthouse of a foreign NGO in the neighbourhood.

Security forces arrived at the site soon after one of the attackers detonated his explosives, enabling the two others to enter the compound, he said.

He added the militants, armed with weapons and hand grenades, exchanged gunfire with the security forces, who managed to shoot dead the attackers.

Two workers of the NGO, one Afghan and a foreigner, were also killed in the assault, Stanikzai said. Six staffers of the relief organisation were rescued by police.

As usual, the Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. Without giving a specific figure, a spokesman for the group said a large number of foreigners had been killed.

Eyewitness Mahmood three gunmen in military uniforms fired at the guesthouse from an under-construction building. Gunfire erupted after three explosions rocked the area, he added.

Another resident, Hikmatullah, claimed the assailants had entered the facility, where gunshots were still ringing out. The incident happened 200 metres from the parliament building.

A number of security personnel and civilians have died in recent suicide attacks and bombings in Kabul, including those on a parliamentarian and a British Embassy convoy.
