GHAZNI CTY (Pajhwok): Provincial council members on Wednesday closed their office in southern Ghazni province to protest the rejection of their elected senatorial candidate by the provincial election office.
Khaliq Dad Akbari, the council chief, told Pajhowk Afghan News they had elected Mohammad Rahim Hassanyar their Senate representative through a transparent ballot.
But the Independent Election Commission (IEC) office in Ghazni rejected Hassanyar’s candidacy due to some problems in his documents, he said.
Akbari said the IEC had been unable to vet Hassanyar’s documents in two months, forcing them close their office in protest.
He said the IEC should either accept or reject Hassanyar’s candidacy so that they could elect someone else.
But IEC chief in Ghazni Akhtar Mohammad Ajmal said the problem had been resolved.
